Menopause is the cessation of ovarian activity related to ovulation of eggs. It is the cells
around these eggs that produce estrogen and progesterone needed for menstruation. Depletion of eggs implies a depletion of these estrogen and progesterone producing cells and thus cessation of menstrual periods. This occurs around age 51 years. The perimenopause is where the menstrual cycle starts changing from normal. It has an average onset at age 46 (39-51) with and average duration of 5 years (2-8). Due to the individual variability in each woman, contraception should eb recommended until the postmenopausal state has been established—12 consecutive months without a period or several consecutive months without a period with an FSH level of at least 40IU/L. Other than adolescents, the perimenopause is when women experience the highest rate of unexpected pregnancies. There are many safe contraceptive options for women to select.
As per the Guinness Book of World Records, “On 20 August 1997, Dawn Brooke (UK) became the oldest natural mother when she gave birth to a son by Caesarian section at the age of 59 years. She conceived accidentally, having managed to ovulate past her last period.” https://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/world-records/oldest-mother-to-conceive-naturally-
